On March 13, Horticulture students from our Papakura campus were treated to an engaging and informative composting workshop by Jennifer from Compost Collective.
Jennifer walked students through 3 different composting systems, and demonstrated how organic waste can be a valuable resource for growing food sustainably. Composting is simply “imitating nature at breaking things down”, says Jennifer.
So why composting? It:
1) helps divert huge amounts of organic waste from landfill;
2) reduces methane production —a greenhouse gas far worse than carbon dioxide;
3) is an effective and cost saving solution for waste disposal;
4) increases food security by providing nutrient-rich soil for growing food;
5) is easy and you can choose a composting system that fits your lifestyle; and
6) if you’re already growing your own garden, why buy food for the soil when you can make it yourself for free?
Without doubt, our Horticulture students benefited hugely from this comprehensive 2-hour session.
As we continue our effort in amplifying the horticultural space for a healthier and more sustainable future, we deeply acknowledge the significance of composting. Thank you Compost Collective for sharing your knowledge, and Auckland Council for supporting their cause.
