The purpose of this qualification is to enable the recognition of the entry level skills and knowledge required by the primary industry sector, and to provide a training pathway for entry into careers in the primary sector.

- Domestic learners
- Students must be 16 years of age or over.
- An interest in horticulture industry area as determined through an interview process would be an advantage
Pathways
Education:
This qualification is an entry pathway for learners who are seeking employment, or are newly employed, in the primary industries. The qualification can pathway into the New Zealand Certificate in Horticulture (General) (Level 3) [Ref: 2677-2]
Employment:
Graduates of this qualification will have the skills and knowledge to obtain entry level roles in the primary sector, for example farm assistant, turf labourer, orchard worker, harvester, vineyard hand, assistant beekeeper, stable assistant, stud farm hand, store assistant, fish filleter, deckhand, mussel opener.

What are the benefits
This programme is a broad and deep introduction to horticulture that will support employment in a wide range of areas across the horticultural industry. It is also suited to hobbyist horticulturalists keen to learn skills that they can use in their own orchards and gardens.
Graduates leave with a thorough understanding of plants and soils, as theoretical knowledge underpins all practical skills gained.
Content includes ways to look after your soil, and the different options in managing pests, weeds, and plant diseases. A very popular module requires students to propagate plants by many different techniques including seeds, cuttings, and grafting.
Study can be undertaken either full-time or part-time, allowing for flexible study around your work and home commitments.
