Description
The purpose of this qualification is to recognise the entry-level skills and knowledge required to provide person-centered support in the health and wellbeing sectors, and to provide a training pathway for entry into careers in the health and wellbeing sectors.
Course Content
• Roles and Functions of a support worker
• Person Centered care
• Communication and Reporting requirements in a health or wellbeing setting
• Min. 80 hours of work experience in a health or wellbeing setting

Entry Requirements
The entry requirements for the programme are as below. Talk to us if you are not sure whether you qualify. Our team will help you through this process.
• Students must be 16 years of age or over.
• At the time of enrolment, any vaccination requirements set out by the Ministry of Health will be applicable.
• All applicants will be interviewed to consider the application for the enrolment. Acceptance will be determined at the discretion of the interviewer.
• There may be further restrictions when this course is offered under a Tertiary Education Commission Contract.
• Students enrolled in the distance and blended learning programme are required to have access to a computer and internet.

Pathways
Education:
This qualification provides a pathway for people to progress from secondary education, new learners wanting to work in a health or wellbeing related service, or those wanting to re-enter the workforce in a health or wellbeing setting. Graduates may progress to the New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Level 3).
Employment:
Graduates of this qualification will have the skills and knowledge required to work safely and effectively in entry-level positions in the health and wellbeing sectors.
Intakes
Mangere Campus
Start Date: 23rd of September 2024. Timings: Monday to Thursday 9.30am-4pm. 3 block weeks of practical. Duration: 13 weeks.
What are the benefits
This programme is designed to provide foundation skills for those who want to embark on a career in the person-centered care sector.
Students gain knowledge of the role of health care assistant and the required professional attributes. They will understand and apply the fundamentals of infection control and will be able to provide support services under supervision in a culturally appropriate manner. Students will also gain skills and knowledge in communicating and meeting the needs of clients under supervision in health and well-being settings. The programme includes practical components that are completed both on campus and work environment. Overall, It provides the necessary foundation skills to ensure that students are able to work safely at an entry-level in a health or well-being setting.
Study can be undertaken either full-time or part-time, allowing for flexible study around your work and home commitments.
