Description
This programme aims to provide the learner with the foundation skills and knowledge required to provide person-centred care in the health and wellbeing sectors.
This programme is suitable for learners beginning their careers in the health and wellbeing industry as well as those looking to re-enter the workforce. This programme will ensure that graduates can work at an entry-level in a health or wellbeing setting under general supervision.
Course Content
The programme has three modules:
Module 1 Roles and Functions
· Legislation and acts that identify roles and responsibilities of the Health Care Assistant (HCA), professional attributes of an HCA,
· Discomfort Pain Injury (DPI) framework,
· Perform moving and handling techniques using a range of equipment,
· Identify types of infections, (diseases) and modes of transmission in a health or wellbeing setting, and
· Key infection control practices.
Module 2 Person-Centred Care
· Te Tiriti of Waitangi’s impact on health care practices in supporting bicultural relationships,
· Tikanga practices,
· Personal stressors, signs, and tools to manage support self-care, and
· Factors affecting the quality of life in a health and wellbeing setting.
Module 3 Communication and Reporting
· Code of Rights,
· Organisational policies and procedures,
· Reporting and recording requirements to support a person’s health and wellbeing, and
· Communication techniques to provide culturally safe and holistic care to a person and their family in a health and welling setting.

The course is Zero Fees for eligible students.
Entry Requirements
The entry requirements for the programme are as below. Talk to us if you are not sure whether you qualify. Our team will help you through this process.
· NZ Citizen or Permanent Resident.
· 16 years of age or over.
· Not hold NCEA level 2 or similar qualifications.
· At the time of enrolment, any vaccination requirements set out by the Ministry of Health will be applicable.
· Learners enrolled in the blended learning programme are required to have access to a computer and the internet.
· Enrolment is also subject to an interview process.
Pathways
Education:
This qualification provides a pathway for people to progress from secondary education, new learners wanting to work in a health or wellbeing related service, or those wanting to re-enter the workforce in a health or wellbeing setting. Graduates may progress to the New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Level 3).
Employment:
Graduates of this qualification will have the skills and knowledge required to work safely and effectively in entry-level positions in the health and wellbeing sectors.

Christchurch
Start Date: 18th of March 2023. Timings: Monday to Thursday 9.30am-4pm. 3 block weeks of practical. Duration: 13 weeks.
Mangere
Duration: 13 weeks.
What are the benefits
This programme is designed to provide foundation skills for those who want to embark on a career in the person-centered care sector.
Students gain knowledge of the role of health care assistant and the required professional attributes. They will understand and apply the fundamentals of infection control and will be able to provide support services under supervision in a culturally appropriate manner. Students will also gain skills and knowledge in communicating and meeting the needs of clients under supervision in health and well-being settings. The programme includes practical components that are completed both on campus and work environment. Overall, It provides the necessary foundation skills to ensure that students are able to work safely at an entry-level in a health or well-being setting.
Study can be undertaken either full-time or part-time, allowing for flexible study around your work and home commitments.
