Description
The programme is aimed at young people who want to pursue a career in the hospitality sector. The programme has a practical, hands-on focus covering unit standards in cookery, barista and hot beverage skills, food safety and food service along with customer service, numeracy and literacy. Learners will gain NCEA (Level 2).
Course Content
This programme consists of unit standards relating to the following areas:
• Food safety
• Preparation of hot and cold beverages including espresso coffee
• Providing table service
• Preparing fruit and vegetable cuts and salads
• Preparing food by frying, baking, poaching, boiling, steaming, grilling and roasting
• Preparing and presenting basic sandwiches
• Preparing jams
• Interpersonal Communication;
• Literacy and Numeracy.

Entry Requirements
• NZ Citizen or Permanent Resident.
• 16-19 years of age at the time of commencing study.
• Not hold NCEA level 2 or similar qualifications.
• Enrolment is also subject to an interview process.

Pathways
Education:
This qualification can lead to the New Zealand Certificate in Cookery (Level 3) or the New Zealand Certificate in Food and Beverage Service (Level 3).
Employment:
This qualification can lead to entry level roles in hospitality sector like café worker, barista and kitchen hand.

What are the benefits
This programme is designed for youth enabling them to achieve NCEA level 2 in a hospitality industry context.
The programme provides a lot of practical, hands-on learning, covering food safety, beverage making, customer service and cookery skills.
This is a full-time programme which generally runs Monday to Friday helping to prepare you for entering the workforce or further studies once you graduate.
Eligible youth learners will have access to additional support like travel allowances, safety gear and uniforms.
