Description
This micro-credential is designed for those working in dementia care. The training scheme aims to provide in-depth knowledge of different types of dementia, its causes, and its effects on the clients and their families.
Learners will gain specialist skills in applying person-centered approaches to care and support; using supportive communication strategies to interact with clients and their families; identifying and using strategies to manage challenging behaviours.
Course Content
This micro-credential consists of 3 modules covering the following areas:
Module 1:
· Introduction to dementia and its physiology,
· Understand behaviours related to dementia and strategies to better support people living with dementia,
· Understand the impacts of dementia on daily life, care strategies that promote a person-centered approach, caring for those with co-existing conditions, and
· Strategies to minimize the need to restrain a person living with dementia.
Module 2:
provide a person-centered approach to support a person living with dementia. This is a practical module to develop a person-centered approach using care strategies, best practices, and techniques with a focus on reducing the impact of dementia on a person’s behaviour.
Module 3:
recognize the potential effects on people providing support for those with dementia and develop strategies to manage the effects.

Entry Requirements
The entry requirements for the programme are as below. Talk to us if you are not sure whether you qualify. Our team will help you through this process.
· NZ Citizen or Permanent Resident.
· 18 years of age or over.
· Achieved the New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Level 3) or at least 5 years work experience in a caregiving role in a health, disability, and aged support setting.
Pathways
Education:
This qualification may lead to further study in related health and wellbeing contexts such as the New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Advanced Care and Support) (Level 4), or in leadership and management.

Start Date: 17 April 2024. Class Timings: Wed and Thursday 1.30-4.30pm. (Practical) 5 hours per week. Duration: 15 weeks.
