"Being at Skills Update really helped me
to overcome a lot barriers"
Hi my name is Tautari Ratima and I am writing about my time and experiences I had at Skills Update Training Kelston Branch 2014.I came to Skills Update after hearing from my mum’s friend, Marcus Nathuran, who told me about an army course. He told me that he could pathway me into the defence force. For me getting into the army is my lifelong goal because my dad was ex-Army, I also like the idea of the physical challenge and it’s a good career.
I came to Skills Update – Kelston branch, and joined the Pre Services Course. I found out that I could do all my training, and education to get me into the defence forces.
During the course I learnt about aptitude writing and testing, the course also covers unit standards that are relevant to the defence force. We covered Army-type interviewing, verbal communication, and how not use slang words but proper English. The training that implemented is similar to the training they do in the Army, the best thing was how to deal with assertiveness.
Marcus is currently helping me get my learners driver license through Skills Update, as it’s a pre-requisite for the NZ Army.
Being at Skills Update really helped me to overcome a lot barriers, mainly those that I mentioned above. I got really good support with my learning and training to fulfil my lifelong dream of getting into the Army. Especially since the tutor is ex-military, he knows what it takes mentally and physically get in.
I really appreciate the time and effort that Marcus (tutor) gave to me and others in the class. I would not have made it into the Army without his support, motivation, training and expertise. I am grateful for having this opportunity and hope other students on the course take the same opportunities. This course has changed my life, and I’m a going to be a Solider in the NZ Army.
Thanks Skills Update and Marcus.
